There are subtleties here. Yes, Sun owns the rights to the language (after
all, they did invent it), but they don't own or control its direction and
its standards. The JCP owns this (which is why you need to sign away a wrath
of NDA and IP disclosure to join.

I believe it was the JCP that stopped that.

Ok you got me on the 26 years one :) - but having developed custom solutions
for telcos, banks, and utilities worldwide, stock exchanges and a plethora
of other big name companies, no one's ever had a problem with Sun being the
overseer of Java.
