have to agree there. the picture quality is better (better reception,
esp. on ABC), the current/next program display is useful.
you don't need a new wide-screen tv for digital, it's nice but not
essential. HD & SD set-top boxes can output to either 4:3 or 16:9
screens.
and with cheap set-top boxes currently not much more than $100, i
don't see that there'll be any need to keep analog going past 2008 (or
whenever the cutoff date is supposed to be). by then the boxes will be
under $50.
as far as i can tell, the main problem with digital TV is the same
as the problem with cable and pay tv - the legislation is designed
primarily to protect the interests of the incumbent free-to-air
commercial TV stations, with any other considerations coming in a very
distant second.
