There was a recent thread on Slashdot about how to build a mail
system for a million users.  There's lots of noise, as usual with
Slashdot, but there's some good stuff in the comments and reading
them makes it quite clear that doing this is NOT rocket science.
All the components -- clustering technologies, robust scalable MTAs,
webmail software, etc. -- are well known and widely used.
