Compared to the megabyte of PDF in a typical email newsletter, RSS is very 
compact. It is just some text with HTML markup with an extra XML wrapping.

This is efficient if the subscriber only reads a few of the articles in the 
RSS feed and so most of the linked images and documents are never loaded to 
the subscriber's browser.
