At <not-un-usual large suburban> College we use:
FileZilla - for students to ftp their web sites onto our intranet (Suse) server)
PostgreSQL - for database work with students (running on Suse )
Apache2 and PHP - also running on Suse
We use Suse for our gateway/firewall, DHCP and intranet servers
Moodle - running also on Suse
We have had some issue with OpenOffice on our network (yet to be resolved completely) and use various net resources to find solutions.
We do find some (necessary) eduction sites only accept IE, not Firefox. Eg: the VCAA ON-Demand testing site.
