Actually almost all scientific advances in our society are based on  
free exchange of information, collaboration and sharing.  A model  
that matches the FOSS model almost exactly.  And it's because  
software development is a much closer match to say mathematical  
development that this works so well.

You know large companies (very large companies) don't back FOSS for  
charity, they back it, they put a lot of resources into it, because  
they get a lot back.
