I hate to disabuse you, but I had a very similar call from St George 
bank. The caller asked me to identify myself by providing personal 
information, which I flatly refused to do. I initially thought it was a 
scam, and even went into a branch office where they told me that the 
bank would never do such a thing and that they could not identify any 
reason why the bank was calling me.

When it happened again I rang the bank to ask if they were calling me 
and they said yes they were - it was something about a $10.00 payment 
they had not received.

What amazes me is that many people must provide such information. If 
they didn't, the banks and Telstra would have given up ages ago.
