Firefox, noscript and requestpolicy
It is a bit of a pain browsing sometimes and I tend to use less safe options when buying on-line (when I really, really shouldn't have to) but it's amazing just how many tracking sites most media sites run.
requestpolicy makes it easy to just blacklist all requests to facebook, google-analytics etc.
There seems to be a proliferation of monitoring sites at the moment. In just ten minutes I found these:
