[LINK] NBN Co won't say how many ADSL users will end up on satellite

I think the number of people the satellite service was to cover has not changed.
What has changed is the estimate of what proportion of those people in the satellite
footprint would sign up for a connection. The original plan woefully underestimated
the proportion of people that would want a satellite connection.
Complicated initially by the Interim service on IPSTAR and other satellites, which the
Strategic Review said was to cover 250,000 premises, however the ISS only had
sufficient capacity for 48,000 connections, which was largely reached in 2013 - and
the NBN doubled the satellite service speed from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps, further
increasing the load on the ISS to the point where it was largely unusable for many
people. People were signing up to satellite service "faster than expected".

Also, with the new NBN satellites, the number of premises 'passed' by satellite
increases as they build more and more earthstations to enable more geographies.
FWIW, the 2013 Strategic Review has the initial rollout timetable for satellite
service increasing from 250,000 in June 2014 to 599,000 by June 2024.

While the Revised Outlook on the following page pegs the maximum number at 306,000 in
June 2024. Not sure where the other 293,000 premises went!
