Yes, in this case, 'tewel man' can mean spirit. But it would be more specific to say 'male spirit,' because the caption talks about 'tewel man' not 'tewel' or 'tewel meri'

TUPELA MARET I HOLIM PAS TEVEL MAN

This inscription is on a painting by Thomas Umba. It shows a man and  
a woman holding a pink creature that's primarily a face and what  
looks like two legs and three arms. The obvious translation would be  
"A married couple capture a devil man"  but I'm thinking that might  
be too literal. Should "tevel man" be translated as "spirit" or "evil  
spirit" in this context?

Input appreciated.
