Reiterating what I mentioned earlier: 'tewel man' can mean spirit. But it would be more specific to say 'male spirit,' because the caption talks about 'tewel man' not 'tewel' or 'tewel meri'

There is also the fact of diferent styles of tokpisin spoken within the different areas of PNG. Mr Umba, I believe, is from the highlands region so their style of tokpisin is quite different to the other regions. This also applies to the way words are spelt.

In the Momase Region, we pronounce and spell 'tevel' as 'tewel' with the "V' substituted for the "W".

Thus if one had a dream saw a dead relative. It would be the tevel of the relative. I think the use of spirit in Tok Pisin today is a recent influence of English. Thus today one hears preachers talking about spirit man - to mean the inner man, the soul, the spirit, etc., but tevel bilong man was also used to mean the same subject in the past. I think tevel and devil or evil did not necessarily mean the same things in the past.

Ngawae Mitio
Language and Communication Studies,
University of Technology
Lae, PNG.

----- Original Message -----
From: "Eby Mark" <markeby@azbri.com>
To:
