(With apologies for cross-posting!)

The Micronesian and Australian Friends Association (MAFA) and Pasifika
Student Society are pleased to present the following upcoming Seminar with
guest speaker *Dr. Glenn Petersen:*

*Friday, November 7th 3:30pm*

*Coombs** Extension Room 1.13, with reception to follow in the Foyer*

*Does "Micronesia" Mean Anything Anymore? *

Because of decisions made in the wake of the 1975 Micronesian
Constitutional Convention, the eastern and central Caroline Islands took
for themselves the "Micronesia" label as the Federated States of
Micronesia, and other political entities in the greater Micronesian culture
area have gradually come to differentiate or distance themselves from
"Micronesia." I want to discuss some of the implications of this,
especially for attempts to understand continuities in both patterns of
areal integration and the relevance of traditional sociopolitical forms and
processes for contemporary social life in the region.

Glenn Petersen teaches anthropology, international affairs, and geography
at the City University of New York, and has chaired the Department of
Sociology and Anthropology at its Bernard Baruch campus for 20 years. He
has been conducting ethnographic research in Micronesia since the early
1970s, focusing both on patterns of traditional chieftainship and social
organization and on the Micronesians' struggle to end American colonial
rule in their islands. He has also served as a member of the Federated
States of Micronesia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Among his
books are *One Man Cannot Rule a Thousand: Fission in a Ponapean
Chiefdom*; *Decentralization
and Micronesian Federalism; Ethnicity and Interests at the 1990 the
Federated States of Micronesia Constitutional Convention*; and *Traditional
Micronesian Societies: Adaptation, Integration, and Political Organization.*
