In August 2012, the Australian Government announced it would resume offshore processing of asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat. In November 2012, the relocation of asylum seekers to the Manus Island detention centre in Papua New Guinea resumed.
Since then, a series of disturbing events and allegations concerning life inside the centre have ensued.

This panel discussion examines the implications of Australian refugee policy and practices and explores the dense terrain of detention, security, violence and development in Papua New Guinea. Drawing on a range of perspectives, panelists will consider the
global significance of the Manus detention centre and situate it in the social and economic context of PNG to ask how the burgeoning male-dominated security industry relates to the lived security of families and communities facing the development challenges
of inequality and violence.
