This presentation gives insight into the first creative practice-led PhD project rooted in Māori epistemologies and traditions of thought. Drawing upon the nineteenth century teachings of Maori scholar Mohi Ruatapu, concepts and precedents within cosmologies
and artworks this project also included investigations through creative writing, choreography, performance, video and installation. Creative outcomes included a volume of poetic texts, video installation works, a dance duet described by NZ dance critics as
one of the highlights of 2012, and an hour-long dance and video installation production with commissioned music, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and dog. Fresh from the 2015 Deans and Directors of Creative Arts ‘Outstanding Field’ symposium at the Victorian
College of the Arts and University of Melbourne, Dr. Moana Nepia will also share insights into some of the ways in which findings from this study inform his current work helping to establish new courses in Pacific arts in the Center for Pacific Islands Studies
at the University of Hawai‘i.</div>

<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Moana Nepia is a choreographer, video artist, and curator who studied dance at the VCA in Melbourne in the 1980’s, had careers in classical ballet and contemporary dance in New Zealand and Europe, then retrained as a painter at
Chelsea and Wimbledon Schools of Art in London. His work has been included in exhibitions in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, the UK, Germany, Canada, the US and Palau. He has published poetry, curated exhibitions on film, video and photography of Māori
dance, contemporary Pacific Island art, is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai‘i, and Arts Editor for <em>The</em> <em>Contemporary Pacific</em> journal.</span></div>
