<span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"">The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) will celebrate Papua New Guinea’s 40 years of independence with a program of screenings, presentations and a special performance
by PNG’s award-winning musician George Telek as part of the NFSA’s <i>100 Seats</i> series on Saturday 19 September.
</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"">Telek as he is known to his legion of fans in PNG, traverses many musical styles and perfectly captures the spirit of the proud cultural heritage of the Tolai people through his haunting
voice. His 1997 album <i>Telek</i> won an ARIA award as Best World Music Album. In this
<i>100 Seats</i> session, Telek will talk about his country as a source of inspiration for his music, and perform selected tracks with guest musicians.</span>

<p><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"">Telek said: ‘I am very much looking forward to my visit to Australia to celebrate this landmark occasion, the 40th anniversary of PNG independence. This is an important time for my
country and I am honoured to be invited by the NFSA to perform as part of the 100 Seats series and to be involved in the PNG celebration program".</span>

nation. We are proud to mark their 40th anniversary of independence with these events.’</span>

<p><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"">The celebrations will kick off on September 1 with a free selection of films from the NFSA collection. The program will give audiences a rare insight into the rich and complex history
of PNG traditional life, colonial invasion, war and the impacts from industry from the sixties to today. This package will screen throughout September and October in Arc cinema.

<p><i><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"">PNG on Screen</span></i><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif""> will include a series of documentaries from Australians working in PNG communities.
The documentaries capture the traditional way of life and the evolution of PNG to a young national in the modern world. These sessions include Q&As with filmmakers.</span>

discussing their experience of life in that country with members of the local PNG community. Michael Waterhouse will also share his research into the dramatic work and lives of the goldfield miners between the wars.
