<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-US">The 2015-16 drought and frosts in Papua New Guinea: impacts, some lessons and research opportunities to enhance long term resilience</span></b></p>
<b><span lang="EN-US"> </span></b>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">An El Niņo induced drought and series of frosts impacted much of rural Papua New Guinea from April 2015. Since November, rain has improved water and food supply for many, but not all, villagers. The long dry period and
its aftermath continue to have a major impact in parts of PNG, causing considerable distress and an increased death rate in a limited number of remote locations.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"><br>
</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">A summary is given of the impacts of the drought and frosts on crop production, food supply, drinking water, villagers’ health and schools, then some lessons are drawn from this event. Suggestions are made on research
opportunities in the post-drought phase and for enhancement of long-term food security.</span></p>
