The remarkable Sir John Ferguson (1881–1969), author of the magisterial seven-volume
Bibliography of Australia, was a leading Sydney barrister and judge and collector of all types of Australian and South Pacific materials. His vast foundation collection includes over 400 manuscript items or collections that mostly document 19th-century
Australian history, plus his extensive personal papers. Researching the quirky and complicated pasts of these 400+ manuscripts, Michael Piggott has been piecing together the stories of their journey from creation to acquisition.
