Dear Prof Kanowski,<br>
<br>
I would be very grateful if you could circulate this email through
your Department to encourage greater participation at 'Expanding
Horizons' from early-career researchers and PhD students from the
science, technology, engineering and medical sectors.<br>
<br>
The Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) is
holding the event on March 28-29. Registrations will close
shortly.<br>
<br>
<br>
Kind regards,<br>

<b>The "Expanding Horizons" event<br>
</b>"Expanding Horizons" provides an opportunity for early career
researchers and professionals to meet politicians in Canberra, and to
discuss cross-disciplinary work with colleagues. <br>
<br>
People from all disciplines are invited to register - science,
technology, engineering and medicine, the humanities, arts and social
sciences. Many will have completed a research degree in the
previous three or four years. Others will have taken up new positions
with universities, CSIRO, in research or industry, or in galleries or
museums in the last 6 years or so.<br>
<br>
<b>What the event is about</b><br>
The Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) is
holding the event to open new horizons for emerging researchers
and professionals, and participants will discuss their work with
MPs.<br>
<br>
How can early career researchers and professionals influence policy?
Which new industries or problem areas in Australia would benefit
from a cross-disciplinary approach?<br>
<br>
The event features a Briefing Day at the National Library, dinner at
the Ottoman Restaurant (one of Canberra's finest), breakfast with a
Federal Government Minister, morning tea with the Opposition, and
lunch at the National Press Club.<br>
<br>
The guest speaker at the Press Club is actress Sigrid Thornton
who will be speaking on creativity and collaboration and drawing
on her film and television experiences.<br>
<br>
Your experiences and ideas on cross-disciplinary work will feed into a
research project on collaborations between the arts and the sciences.
CHASS is running this project with funding from the Department of
Education, Science and Training.<br>
<br>
You'll hear a series of stimulating and important speakers, and have
a chance to mix with colleagues across a wide range of disciplines and
institutions.<br>
<br>
Highlights include individual meetings with Members and Senators. All
registrants will be paired with a colleague for an appointment with a
Parliamentarian, and an opportunity to discuss the potential of their
work.<br>
