<div>The tropical forests of Papua New Guinea (PNG) are a complex
natural resource management challenge. Forests are important for local
livelihoods and an important source of income for the national
government. They also have significant value for global conservation
of tropical forest biodiversity. Development and use of forest
resources is seen by most sectors of the community as an integral
component of future national development. This seminar presents the
results of a project completed in 2005 with funding from ACIAR that
aimed to increase capacity and knowledge within the PNG government for
forest planning and inventory and improved systems to analyse
alternative timber harvesting options. Causes of over-harvesting of
forest resources are considered and the implications of alternative
management approaches are discussed.<br>

<div><b>Bio:</b> Rod Keenan is Professor and Head of School of Forest
and Ecosystem Science, the University of Melbourne. He has a B. Sc.
(Forestry) from the ANU, a PhD in forest ecology from University of
British Columbia and 25 years experience in forest research and forest
management in Canada, Japan and Australia. He has particular interests
in forest resource assessment and planning, indicators of sustainable
forest management, tropical and temperate forest ecology and
silviculture and forest policy. He is currently a member of the UN-FAO
Advisory Group for the Global Forest Resource Assessment. He has
worked on collaborative projects with the PNG Forest Research
Institute since 1996.</div>
