Dear ANU Zero Emissions Society Announce list,

The society has had a good start this last month!

While activities this year are partially wrapping up for exams and the
summer we now have a solid crew from which to build a society everyone
at ANU will know about and run programs of interest to all.

Fortunately with the Stern Report
(http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2428781,00.html) describing
the enormous economic benefits of acting strongly on climate change
now as opposed to later, it seems the issue of climate change has
finally come of age and
pressure on the government is growing with intensity every day. Next
year we will waste no time with the society starting strongly in
O-Week. Stay tuned for information about that.

During the break a group of enthusiastic members will be helping to
design a great website for www.anuzeroemissions.org. We have several
events in the pipeline for first term including a bigger and better
climate change day and many projects to
reduce ANU's energy demand. If you want to be involved be in either of
these things or have any other ideas be sure to get in contact with us
(society at anuzeroemissions.org) or join the discuss list
(http://mailman.anu.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/zeroes.discuss).

A fascinating lecture about the economics of stopping climate change was
delivered at ANU a few weeks back and is now available for download as
an MP3: http://info.anu.edu.au/Discover_ANU/News_and_Events/Public_Lectures/_Warwick_McKibbin.asp.

Don't forget the Walk Against Warming this Saturday, people from the
ANU will be there in force! A group will be leaving to go to the
Legislative Assembly at 11:30am from the ANU Students' Association
Building with a bunch of colourful T-shirts and banners.

We look forward to seeing you back at ANU next year! If you want to be
involved in planning be sure to subscribe to our discuss list.

Have a good break,

-----------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to join many other concerned people at this national
rally and tell all of your friends. Numbers really matter.

Mark Saturday November 4th in your calendar now!

The Australian Government doesn't care about climate change. We know you do.

The Government will only take real action on climate change and
protect our futures if we tell them to. Join thousands of other
Australians, including heaps of people from ANU, in a peaceful walk
urging action on climate change now. With climate change firmly on the
front page now is the perfect time to exert pressure on our
politicians to take global warming seriously, and give us responsible
policy and leadership for the future.

Where: 12pm Civic Square, ACT Legislative Assembly, Canberra. This
Saturday the 4th of November.

What: A fun walk to Glebe Park for speakers and entertainment.

Bring: Family, friends, kids, colleagues, bikes, colourful banners,
umbrellas and placards, sunflowers and a picnic lunch.

Join the growing movement demanding deep cuts in greenhouse gas
emissions through public policy to spur renewable energy, energy
efficiency, new technology and better public transport. This day of
action coincides with United Nations talks and events all around the
world.

For those who won't be in Canberra there are events in most cities
across the country.
