Dear ANU Zero Emissions Society Announce List,
I hope you will be able to make our seminar on Tuesday (see just
below) - it should be very informative and entertaining. A group of
ANUers will be meeting to go to the big Thursday Parliament House
protest at 1pm in Union Court (see below). Be sure to tell all of your
friends about that event and make it down. It should be a great fun
afternoon. Unfortunately I won't be able to make the meeting tomorrow
(4pm in Students' Association Conference Room) but VP Bindu will be
there!
See you around,

SHRINKING CARBON SINKS - carbon budgeting from the 'Global Carbon Project'
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE GLOBAL CARBON PROJECT - Prof. Pep Canadell
CHEMISTRY T1 (Arthur Hambly) – Bld. 34 (North side of University Av)
THIS TUESDAY 7 August 2007
1PM - 2PM
http://www.anuzeroemissions.org
Where is emissions growth really occurring and why? Where can we hope
to put carbon back and what natural carbon sinks should we be
preserving? Half of human emissions are reabsorbed by natural sinks –
but alarmingly that fraction appears to be dropping. Executive
Director Professor Canadell's most recent research confirmed that
avoiding deforestation, which in the tropics alone accounts for 20 per
cent of human emissions, can play a key role in reducing future
greenhouse gas concentrations.
The political dialogue on climate change is often grossly misinformed
about where carbon emissions are actually coming from and going to,
with all parties distorting reality for political advantage. Here you
will get the straight facts about decarbonising our economy from the
people who work them out.
The scientific goal of the Global Carbon Project is to develop a
complete picture of the global carbon cycle and human influences upon
it. Dr Canadell recently published 'Tropical Forests and Climate Policy' in
Science and is travelling presenting the findings.

YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION - AUSTRALIAN YOUTH CLIMATE CHANGE COALITION
THIS THURSDAY August 9, 2007
2-3PM
LAWNS OF PARLIAMENT HOUSE
PLEASE PASS THIS EVENT ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW
http://anuedu.facebook.com/event.php?eid=2536056267
WHAT: The action is a convergence of young people at parliament house
to express our alarm at the inadequate action being taken on climate
change and launch the Australian Youth Climate Coalition's (AYCC)
'adopt a politician' campaign.
The campaign involves young people 'adopting' their politicians to
teach them about the urgency for climate action.
2-2:45pm – on the lawns outside parliament
There will be youth speakers, a
how-low-can-Australia's-emission-targets-go limbo game, signing of the
'Rescue Our Future' banner, and local group- the Andi and George band
playing.
3-3:30pm – in the galleries of parliament
We will fill the galleries and let the politicians know how much we
care by having our physical presence in view while our petition is
presented. To see and sign the petition online go to-
http://www.youthclimatecoalition.org/dec.asp
3:30-4:30pm – in the Senate Committee Room
We will have the chance to question the politicians about their
climate policy ourselves!
Politicians attending are:
- Peter Garrett, Shadow Environment Minister
- Malcolm Turnbull, Environment Minister (TBC)
- Lyn Allison, Leader of the Democrats (TBC)
- Bob Brown, Leader of the Greens
If you care about the future then come!
The theme is beach-wear! So wear your boardies over pants, bring a
beach volley ball, or if your really keen, come in lifesaver gear!
Inside the AYCC's declaration will be presented to parliament via
Peter Andren in the House of Reps and Bob Brown in the Senate. To sign
onto the declaration electronically go to-
http://www.youthclimatecoalition.org/dec.asp.
If there are enough of us we will fill the galleries of parliament so
that the politicians can't avoid seeing us!
Finally, there will be a optional forum from 3pm inside parliament
wherein we can meet with senior politicians and discuss our ideas
about climate change policy.
If you care about the future then come!
