Dear ANU Zero Emissions Society announce list,
**Please forward onto your lists and interested friends**
CLIMATE CHANGE: A MORAL PERSPECTIVE from
BISHOP GEORGE BROWNING
MANNING CLARK THEATRE 5
THIS THURSDAY 23 August 2007
1-2PM
Dollars dominate current discussions about climate change and our
responses to it. In this public lecture Bishop George Browning calls
for a broader view of the wellbeing of the humans, one that includes
the environment.
Since the industrial revolution, human economics has dominated our
thinking and now threatens the broader ecological economy behind it.
All living things have a stake in the ecology of the whole creation,
and Bishop Browning will argue that emissions trading with appropriate
targets and pricing is a crucial step in bringing some balance back to
the Earth.
The Right Reverend George Browning was elected the 9th Bishop of
Canberra and Goulburn in 1993. Born in England, he had worked as a
jackeroo in Australia prior to joining the Church. In 2005 Bishop
Browning became Convener of the Anglican Communion Environmental
Network, and in 2007 made a submission to the Prime Minister's Task
Force on Emissions Trading entitled 'Climate change - a moral
perspective'.
*** ROBERT runs for WORONI and other STUDENT ELECTIONS ***
I would like to apologise for my personal lack of involvement
recently. As many of you will already know I am running with my friend
Tully Fletcher to co-edit the student magazine Woroni next year (with
a team of talented individuals along for the ride) on the tagline "A
Woroni Worth Reading" and the campaign has taken up a lot of my time
recently. It all ends when voting closes this Thursday though. Now for
some shameless self-promotion:
THIS WEEK MONDAY TO THURSDAY
IN UNION COURT VOTE FOR THE NEW WORONI: A Woroni Worth Reading!
We're true believers in the role good student media can play in
bringing a university community together and, like many ANU students,
we think Woroni can do a better job. That's why we're seeking your
endorsement to create a New Woroni Worth Reading.
We're both published writers, experienced editors and avid periodical
fans and we love original thinking and style. Like The New Yorker, The
New Woroni we imagine will blend the local with the universal, the
hilarious with the intelligent and the arty with the academic. The New
Woroni will keep a watchful, witty and independent eye on your student
representatives, the university and the world we live in.
University Union
20 August 2007 11:30am - 4:30pm
21 August 2007 12:30pm - 6:30pm
22 August 2007 1:30pm - 4:30pm
23 August 2007 10:30am - 4:30pm
We have developed a sound new business model for Woroni which
includes: Publishing fortnightly (as in past years) in a simpler
news-magazine format to make Woroni more readable and relevant;
creating a new interactive online edition to make Woroni more
accessible and modern; and reimbursing our best student columnists,
satirists and artists for their work to ensure regular quality
content. We've done the sums and we can offset this new cost by
publishing more often (but with fewer pages) and by reducing excessive
use of colour. And we know advertisers will love the new style and
increased circulation.
You can look forward to:
Talk of the Town - Events Calendar - Student Job Classifieds - Arts &
Culture - Health & Sport - Cartoons & Humour - Essays and Opinion -
News & Reporting - Student Travelog
We want Woroni to be a publication that respects your intelligence as
well as your sense of humour – something we all look forward to. Vote
for the New Woroni: A Woroni Worth Reading!

There are also multiple candidates (4!) running for Environment
Officer. I sincerely recommend talking to them and checking out who is
behind them and why they are running before voting. There are people
representing each of the candidates (and even the candidates
themselves) in Union Court during voting hours this week.
Look forward to seeing you there,
--
