*** NOTICE OF GENERAL MEETING - MONDAY OF WEEK 2 ***

Dear ANU Zero Emissions Society announce list,

Welcome to the ANUZES's first year! We hope you are all excited about
the great potential of our society this year.

This email is to encourage you to attend our first semester General Meeting:

Monday 26th of February (Week 2)
4pm sharp to 5.30pm
ANU Students' Association Conference Room (opposite the second hand bookstore)

This is our first ever major meeting. At it we can meet one another,
discuss and finalise our draft constitution (available on our
website), elect members to executive positions and give everyone the
chance to see what activities they can get involved in to help stop
climate change. Nibblies will be available.

If you would like to take on an executive position within the society
including President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Press
Officer or Social Officer then you should come to the meeting and
nominate yourself or contact me to nominate you in your absence.

The society having started just months ago means that there is plenty
of room for experimentation and any input you may have. The society
will become whatever we members decide to make it, so be sure to come
along and take part! Meetings will probably be held fortnightly. The
hope is to make the group very open and empower people to take part in
projects to improve our university without necessarily attending every
meeting. Groups of likeminded members can be formed to focus on a
particular area of interest.

Projects you might like to take on could include:

* Organising events like last year's climate change festival, movies
and seminars
* Designing posters, learning how to publicise events across Canberra
and postering your local area of the university
* Organising and attending meetings with university officials to
spread our message and encourage them to improve their buildings, for
example by varying their A/C thermostat according to the season
* Liaising with other organizations and businesses to coordinate
events or sponsorship deals
* Becoming a Green Office Representative and Ambassador within the
buildings you spend time in to spread the word about how to run a
Green Office/Lab/Hall
(http://www.anu.edu.au/facilities/anugreen/office/index.html)
* Becoming involved in energy auditing or waste reduction programs
such as our new 'Last Out Lights Out' and 'No Incandescents Left
Behind' initiatives
* Coordinating campaigns, surveys and petitions of academics and
students across campus
* Writing an article for Woroni on any aspect of climate change
* Managing news, photos and project opportunities on our email lists and website
* Any other things you are passionate about

*** FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE SOCIETY ***

The ANU now uses some $8 million of electricity each year, which
amounts to a huge quantity of greenhouse gas pollution - the highest
in the ACT. Because climate change is such a major threat to our
future and way of life, the Society's ultimate goal is to make ANU a
net 'zero emissions' campus.

How does one go about achieving such a broad vision?

Coordinating undergraduates, employees and researchers within the
university to bring about:
* 100% GreenPower for the ANU (http://www.greenpower.com.au/)
* Renewable energy generation on campus (sliver cells on building
roofs; see http://solar.anu.edu.au/level_1/projects/sliver_proj.php)
* Energy efficiency through infrastructure improvements and refurbishments
* All new buildings meeting the Green Star Six standard for university buildings

In conjunction with ANUgreen:
* Energy waste reduction through strong GreenOffice, GreenHall,
GreenLab and GreenGrad programs in every building on campus
* Information campaigns about our climate crisis and the solutions on
a local and national level
* A whole lot of other activities yet to be thought of

We hope to do this by openly engaging all concerned parties in the
university. This seems like a lot of work for a new society (and it
is!) but by setting specific goals and timelines we can begin the
critical process of making our campus a true world-leader in applied
sustainability. We're excited to have such a powerful and important
goal.

If you want to be kept up to the minute and get more involved, be sure
to join our high volume discussion list
(http://mailman.anu.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/zeroes.discuss). Please
also consider coming to one of our movie screenings of An Inconvenient
Truth later this week.

We looking forward to meeting and working with you this year,
