Dear announce list,
Sorry for the frequency of emails but I've got a few good ones for
you. Hope you can join the tree planting on Sunday. =)
We are currently contacting potential speakers for a panel on the
ideal Federal Government response to climate change and how the
parties' policies stack up. If you know of any good speakers for this
topic please send a reply so we can get in contact with them.
***ANUZES Seminar: Shrinking Carbon Sinks:
carbon budget research from the 'Global Carbon Project'***
Prof. Pep Canadell
Executive Director
CSIRO Marine & Atmospheric Research
Global Carbon Project
Tuesday 7th August 1 – 2pm
Chemistry (Arthur Hambly) T1 – Bld. 34 (North side of University Av)
Please pass on to your friends/networks and stick up the attached poster around.
The public dialogue on climate change, with a focus on households, is
often not informed by the facts on where carbon emissions are actually
coming from and going to. Where is emissions growth really occurring
and why? Where can we hope to put carbon back and what natural carbon
sinks should we be preserving?
Half of human emissions are reabsorbed by such natural sinks – but
alarmingly that fraction appears to be dropping. Prof. Canadell's most
recent research confirmed that avoiding deforestation, which in the
tropics alone accounts for 20% of human emissions, can play a key role
in reducing future greenhouse gas concentrations. In this free public
seminar he will talk about Global Carbon Project research and paths to
decarbonising our economy.
Prof. Pep Canadell is Executive Director of the Global Carbon Project.
The scientific goal of the project is to develop a complete picture of
the global carbon cycle, including both its biophysical and human
dimensions together with the interactions and feedbacks between them.
He recently published "Tropical Forests and Climate Policy" in Science
and is travelling presenting the findings..

***Youth Climate Change Jobs***
There's a great paid job going with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition
to organise a youth climate conference in October. It's 3 days a week and
I'm really keen to apply but could only do it if it was a job-share
application!
The description is in the attachment. If anyone is keen to do it and job
share with me please let me know!
Thanks,
Emma

***National Tree Day Planting 29/07/07 ***
G'day potential tree planter.
This coming Sunday is National Tree Day and Greening Australia are
hosting another planting morning out at the Cotter area.
The SRES Students Society have organised for some SRES mini-buses to
take any willing volunteers out and back from the uni campus.
Greening Australia are keen to foster their relationship with SRES/ANU
students and last time got 10 of us involved in a new trial method of
direct seeding at the site. This time they would like us to get there a
bit earlier than the rest of the population to work on a site higher up
the hill doing something interesting. In their words "We would like to
invite the ANU students to get a head start by arriving about 45 minutes
earlier than the rest of the volunteers. The incentive to do so is hot
soup, bread rolls and tea and coffee at the site for the early birds."
What we could do, if we get 2 buses full, is have one leave ANU at 8am
for the special planting and the other leaving at 8:45am to join the
main planting group. Unless you are all super keen and we can get 2
buses leaving at 8am, but I don't think that will happen.
The attached flier has all the relevant GA information about the day.
If you would like to come along, just email me at u4318996 at anu.edu.au
and mention whether you would like to leave on the 8am or 8:45am bus.
First in best dressed. Pick up point is the Field Services compound
behind the Geography building:
http://campusmap.anu.edu.au/displaymap.asp?grid=ef54 - between
buildings 48A and 85.
* Make sure you bring the right clothing and footwear. I'll make sure
that GA brings enough tools to cover us students as I'm sure most of you
don't own your own mattock. *
We will be returning around 1:30pm, but one bus may leave earlier if
enough of you need to get back sooner.
Brought to you by your friendly SSS.
Dan.
