Dear ANU Zero Emissions Society announce list,
Members who attend meetings have been quite busy of late
(it's a second term thing!), which has unfortunately slowed down
progress on some fronts. To help out with this we're putting out a
call to everyone on this list to help us in various ways!
1. We as always would love to make more submissions for WORONI.
They love us here at the ANU Zero Emissions Society - so if you've
ever wanted to publish in Woroni (and who hasn't!) and have some
thoughts buzzing around about climate change then send them in to
woroni at anu.edu.au or to any member such as myself feedback.
2. Nathan and Hilary have been good enough to create a
template letter/email which we can SEND TO ACADEMICS or anyone who we
would like to give a seminar at the ANU for the group. It's very easy
to do - just open the letter attached, insert the person's name, maybe
add a personal touch or two and send it off!
Where might you find people to invite? Maybe scanning the website of
the Crawford School of Economics (http://www.crawford.anu.edu.au/) or
the ANU Environmental Law Center (http://law.anu.edu.au/acel/)? Maybe
we can have a series about the best sort of emissions trading system,
given that is the road Australia seems to be going down? See what you
can find and just go ahead and press send! What's the worst that can
happen?
3. A group of 5 of us so far have volunteered to meet on the
21st of June (last day of exams!) to start planning that big
DISCUSSION BETWEEN ACADEMICS AND POLITICIANS on effective Federal
Government responses to climate change. This is going to be a big
project so we need to work together and if anyone else would like to
come on board it would be great if you could give Nathan Deutscher
(4116214 at anu.edu.au) an email so he can keep you posted.
4. As many of you will know, the WALK AGAINST WARMING is by far
the biggest rally on government responses toclimate change in Australia
and the world. It's grown every year and this year is going to be
massive as it is placed two weeks before the Federal Election. Find
out more at http://www.walkagainstwarming.org/ .
We need to bring as many people from ANU along as possible!
Some ideas we have had include:
- Handing out flyers across campus like last year.
- Going around and putting flyers under all academics'/college dorm doors.
- Hall and college competition for the largest group to come over. The
group could win... doughnuts maybe? Otherwise we can ask around for
prizes/donations.
- A free coffee or snack from a place in the union for ANUers who
attend the walk in the colourful theme.
- At the same time go around putting up VoteClimate.org posters (and
stickers?) as well, considering proximity to election. One of these is
attached.
In sum, are there any other good ideas? Who at this stage thinks they
would be able to help coordinate this effort around that time so that
we can have a cohort from ANU to top last year? We can really send a
message that half measures and vacillations from our Government are
not good enough.
Send in your ideas to me or the discuss list zeroes.discuss at anu.edu.au
. I'll mark your email down for future reference once we have more
details about where/when the event will be and what our plans are.
5. We now have the Manning Clark Center 5 booked EVERY TUESDAY
from 1-4pm. Want to show a DVD, Video, online video, seminar, etc?
Fire it off the idea to the discuss list (zeroes.discuss at anu.edu.au) so
that we can confirm, publicise it, show up and stick it on!
Next Tuesday we will probably be showing the excellent movie, "Who
Killed the Electric Car?" at this time folowed by "I Heart Huckabees".
Stay tuned for confirmation.
***RANDOM STUFF!!***
CSIRO studies show that people are much more likely to support serious
action on climate change (and other problems) if you make sure they
realise that any action on climate change will in the short term just
slow the rapid rate of economic growth, and in no way reverse
it. Many people wrongly think that acting on climate change will
actually shrink the economy, which is not suggested by any modelling.
People don't mind a minor slowing of economic growth, but they really
hate the idea of becoming worse off!

reef bleaching due to climate change.
As captain planet might say:
"The power, is yours",
