Hi everyone, could you please forward this email to any contacts, networks
and friends you might have that are interested in the climate change
campaign. Plus, make sure you make a note in your own diaries so you don't
miss out.

In solidarity,
Leigh.

Walk against Warming: Youth Contingent organising meeting:
5pm Tuesday September 25 @ the Conservation Council offices near the ANU.

----

Hi Climate Change Campaigners,

On the Sunday that falls two weeks before the federal election rallies and
demonstrations will take place around the country in a massive show of
support for significant action on climate change.

In Canberra a combination of national environmental organisations, local
student, suburban and community groups, and concerned individuals have come
together to organise our own 'Walk against Warming' protests through the
Climate Recovery Coalition.

These protests have great potential to make a significant impact in the
attitudes of Australians at a time when politicians ignore such attitudes at
their peril. They also present an opportunity for the campaign to clearly
state what actions an incoming government must take to tackle the threat we
face.

In times like these and, especially with what is at stake in this campaign,
we can no longer accept 'business as usual' as the response to our changing
climate. Its time to demand the radical steps that are now required to
overcome the radical problems that have resulted from years of inaction.

We cannot be content with empty rhetoric such as the Sydney Declaration or
timid targets for emissions reductions that may be more acceptable to big
business but that fail to prevent us from reaching the tipping point of
unstoppable warming. Nuclear power, and the continued burning of coal, must
also be exposed on a public stage as the sham solutions that they are.

Youth have historically been the constituency that have taken up issues such
as these and trailblazers for progressive solutions to them. Frequently
young people have taken up causes that were initially controversial or
downright unpopular, but also just causes that through their actions
eventually won.

For Canberra's Walk against Warming there will be a Youth Contingent that
will march to meet other demonstrators at the main rally location. This
contingent will be a place where young people have the rare opportunity to
make their voices heard, but also a place where we can again present the
real solutions to climate change that for many, unfortunately, remain
inconvenient truths.

At 5pm on Tuesday, September 25, at the Conservation Council offices near
the ANU there will be a meeting for everyone interested in helping to
organise the Youth Contingent or wanting to lend a hand in publicising it in
their schools, campuses and workplaces.

Walk against Warming is a time for all of us to make a stand and the Youth
Contingent at it will be a chance for young people to demand that their
future be a sustainable one. I hope that you will be a part of it, and I
hope that your friends, family and everyone you know will be a part of it,
because the world can't wait any longer.

See you at the meeting!

In solidarity,
Leigh.
