Dear all,
There are some changes to the itinerary and there may be further
changes to the times if the conference ends before Friday evening.
This will depend on the number of talks. Dates will be finalised as
quickly as possible so that attendees can book flights and
accommodation for the field trip can be guaranteed.
Plan A
Day 1 Saturday 10th February
We would leave Port Fairy at 8 am and travel straight to Albury. We
may stop at Rutherglen for a late lunch and visit Campbells winery.
Apparently there is a difference in the quality of wines grown on
Pleistocene alluvium as opposed to the Holocene floodplain of the
Murray River. Access permitting we may visit the Wodonga gravel pit
where Pleistocene gravels and lagoon sediments have been studied by
Christine Kenyon. We will then travel straight to Jindabyne for a
restaurant meal and then to Sawpit Creek. There is a lot of travel
involved on this day and stops will be dependent on us making good
time.
Day 2 Sunday 11th February
Sunday will be taken up by the glacial lakes walk as per the previous
email. We will return to Sawpit Creek for a joint BBQ.
Day 3 Monday 12th February
In the morning we will visit the blockstreams at Ravine near the
Yarangobilly caves. We then have the option of returning to Albury to
visit several sites along the Murray. Our guide will be Dr Ralph
Ogden who has dated several deposits including 'Kotupna' gravels and
a source-bordering dune. Ralph will also talk about some of his
Holocene palaeoecological work. We will finish by mid-afternoon so
that attendees can travel straight home.
Plan B
Day 1 Friday 9th February
After lunch we would travel straight to Albury and stay overnight at
one of the campgrounds along the Murray. There are plenty of options
for the evening meal nearby.
Day 2 Saturday 10th February
The morning will consist of travelling to Rutherglen, the Wodonga
gravel pit and seeing the Murray sites with Dr Ralph Ogden. The
afternoon will consist of visiting the Ravine blockstreams and
travelling to Sawpit Creek for a joint BBQ.
Day 3 Sunday 11th February
The glacial lakes walk, returning late afternoon. Those living nearby
in Canberra may choose to continue on home. Those living further away
may choose to remain for the night.
The last day to register for the field trip is 1 Dec this week.
Further updates will subsequently only be posted to registrants.
cheers,
Tim
