BRITISH ANTARCTIC SURVEY
PALAEOECOLOGIST
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC), is a government funded organisation that
undertakes a world-class programme of scientific research in one of the
wildest, most spectacular places on earth. We address key global and
regional issues through analysis, survey and monitoring and are now
seeking an enthusiastic scientist to undertake palaeoenvironmental
research on marine sediment cores from the Antarctic.
Joining a small team of marine geologists, you will specialise in the
Quaternary diatom record in deep-sea cores. You will prepare samples
from the cores (some technical assistance available) and determine
species assemblages using mainly light microscopy. You will integrate
micropalaeontological data with new and existing sedimentological
information to interpret the marine palaeoenvironment, particularly in
terms of rapid climate change. You will be expected to write up the
results for publication in international journals, and presentation of
results at international meetings is encouraged. Training in diatom
species identification will be arranged as appropriate, though detailed
taxonomic studies will not be necessary. Participation in a 6-week
Antarctic cruise (Feb-March 2002) will be required. This is an
opportunity to make an important contribution in a key area of the World
ocean for palaeoclimate studies.
You should have a good degree in Earth science, oceanography or biology,
preferably with a higher degree in micropalaeontology or Quaternary
science. You must also be physically capable and medically fit, as
Antarctic service is required. The position is for a period of three
years and salary will be in the range of £18,500 to £21,600, dependent
on qualifications and experience.
