Subject: Workshop on IMAGE ANALYSIS, sediments and paleoenvironments,
November 8-10th, 2001

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

Workshop on IMAGE ANALYSIS: technical advances in extracting
quantitative data for paleoclimate reconstruction from marine and
lacustrine sequences.

November 8-10, 2001 (just after GSA!)
        University of Massachusetts
        Department of Geosciences
        Amherst, Massachusetts

Organisation: Pierre Francus and Ray Bradley (University of Massachusetts)
              Juergen Thurow (University College London)

This workshop aims:
- To review and illustrate the wide range of quantitative information
that can be retrieved using image analysis techniques
- To bring together scientists from marine and lacustrine realm to
share and discuss laboratory techniques and methods of image analysis
- To initiate the elaboration of protocols/recommendations promoting
a pertinent use of low cost image analysis techniques and
facilitating intercomparisons of measurement techniques in the
paleoclimate community.
- To edit a book compiling all available methods and information on
this topic (to be published in Kluwer's new book series:
"Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research")

The workshop will focus on methodological aspects related to image
analysis techniques used in lacustrine and marine sedimentology.
Emphasis will be on software issues with a special focus on the
process of moving from the acquired image to quantitative information
useful in paleoclimatic reconstruction. Research performed on
varved/laminated/banded sediments should provide most of the
contributions, but other high-resolution studies for paleoclimatic
research using imaging techniques are also welcome. The first day
will be devoted to imaging techniques applied to sediment cores
surfaces, X-Ray radiography, and thin-sections. The second day will
focus on emerging techniques and research papers that demonstrate the
routine use of imaging techniques.

Poster and laboratory sessions are also proposed. To facilitate
technical discussions, the number of participants will be limited to
~25, including invited investigators and other attendees.
Investigators who have conducted research relevant to the workshop
and who have not been invited by the organizers yet, are urged to
contact the workshop organizers at francus at geo.umass.edu.

The workshop is supported by NSF-ATM and IMAGES. Sponsors are
covering travel, food, and lodging for US non-federal scientists,
non-US scientists, and students within the budget limits. Priority
will be given for students and researchers who have problems with
funding. The workshop takes place just after the GSA meeting in
Boston. We will organize a shuttle from GSA to Amherst. Abstract
must be received by September 15th, 2001.

Updated information about abstract preparation, deadlines, fees, and
other details will be available at the conference web site.
