PhD Studentships in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
REF: PSE 137
Scholarships are available for suitably qualified students to pursue
research leading to a PhD in the application and development of Accelerator
Mass Spectrometry (AMS).
The AMS program is centred on the 14 Million Volt Heavy Ion Tandem
accelerator in the Department of Nuclear Physics. Applications of the
technique, which involves the ultra-sensitive detection of individual atoms
of long-lived (often naturally-occurring) isotopes such as carbon-14,
beryllium-10 and chlorine-36, span a wide range of fields. Successful
candidates would have the opportunity to tap into existing collaborations
with earth scientists, archaeologists, environmental scientists or
biomedical researchers. The uniqueness of the facilities has led to strong
and expanding links with Australian and international research groups in
the UK, France, Norway, New Zealand, South America and the USA. The program
has been identified as a key component of a recently funded initiative in
Environmental Research within the Institute of Advanced Studies.
This research should appeal particularly to candidates with an interest in
developing and applying state-of-the art methods to real-world
environmental problems. For more information concerning potential
Quaternary projects, contact Tim Barrows, <Tim.Barrows at anu.edu.au>.
Candidates should have at least a second (IIA) honours degree or equivalent
in physics, earth sciences or chemistry. Scholarship awards will be at the
standard Australian Postgraduate Award rate, presently A$17,267 with the
possibility of supplementation for exceptional candidates.
Candidates may apply at any time.
