Subject: PhD studentship, topic open

The Geography Department is offering a University of Hull Research
Scholarship to suitably qualified applicants wishing to pursue research
leading to PhD level. The Studentship would start in mid-September
2003.

Anyone interested in seeking a topic area in our strong environmental
change research group, especially in the general areas of Holocene
human impact and wetland archaeology, pollen analysis and temperate
zone palaeoecology, or carbonate sediments, feel free to contact me
for further details.

This Studentship will include fees at the home student rate
and maintenance (£9,000 p.a. in 2003/04), for three years. Overseas
students will be supported in their applications for additional
funding to cover the overseas fees.

Background: The Hull Geography Department is a leader in the field,
gaining a Grade 5 in the 2001 RAE. We have benefited from substantial
investments in staff and physical infrastructure over recent years,
including building the Total Environmental Simulator, a major flume
facility at The Deep, itself a landmark building in the centre of
Hull. We have a thriving postgraduate community, plus excellent
research training systems.

Application information: Applicants should look at our Departmental
website: www.hull.ac.uk/geog to familiarise themselves with our four
research themes and indicate which one they feel their proposal is
most closely allied to. The four research themes are:
"	Critical Environmental Policy and Management;
"	Knowledges, Economy and Exclusion;
"	Environmental Change; and
"	Environmental Monitoring and Modelling.
Contact Us: We have no preference for which theme area the
studentship should be in and will select the best proposal which
comes forward. For further information, feel free to contact the
member of staff whose interests most closely match yours, or the
Departmental Director of Research, Professor Graham Haughton:
g.f.haughton at hull.ac.uk
The closing date for applications is 30th April 2003.
For further details and an application form, e-mail: gs at hull.ac.uk,
supplying your name, postal address and stating that your are
interested in the Geography Department's studentship. Please include
'PhD Scholarships' in the subject box.
