"Sequencing Ocean-Ice-Climate Interaction in the North East Atlantic"

Fully-Funded NERC PhD Studentship
School of Geography & Geosciences
University of StAndrews

Supervisor: Dr. William Austin
e-mail: wena at st-andrews.ac.uk; Tel. +44 (0)1334 463988; Fax +44 (0)1334
463949.

Application Closing Date: 1 March 2003
Start Date: 1 October 2003

Please Note: Short-listed candidates will be notified during mid-March and
Interviews held at StAndrews during early May.

NERC funding is available for a three-year tied-studentship leading to the
degree of Ph.D. You should have (or expect to have) a good honours degree
in the natural/physical sciences and an interest in oceanography/climate
change would be an advantage.

You will join a research team, funded by NERC, to investigate North
Atlantic "Ice-Ocean Interactions". The project is focussed on the last
glacial period, specifically Heinrich Events and their European precursors
during Marine Isotope Stages 2 and 3. The studentship will address the
provenance and phasing relationships between North American and European
ice-rafted material in North East Atlantic marine sediment cores (including
IMAGES). There will be an opportunity to join a research cruise, scheduled
for summer 2004, aboard the NERC research vessel Discovery (see
http://www.researchshipunit.com/) where you will take some responsibility
for the selection of your own sampling locations. Training will be
available in the broad field of palaeoceanography/climate change. More
specifically, working on sediment and faunal records from the NE Atlantic,
the analytical methods employed will include: grain size analysis, lithic
grain counts, sediment logging (including colour and XRF core logs),
foraminiferal analysis, stable isotope analysis, tephrochronology, AMS 14C
dating and sediment geochemistry.

Opportunities also exist to visit, work and collaborate with the other
researchers in the project, including: Dr. James Scourse (School of Ocean
Sciences, University of Wales), Dr. Ian Hall (Department of Earth Sciences,
University of Wales, Cardiff), Dr. Francis Grousett (University of
Bordeaux), Dr. Rainer Zahn (University of Barcelona), Professor Nick McCave
(Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge).
