We have a couple of places left for a short diatom course to be run between
11th and 14th November. Rather than add a pesky attachment I've copied the

Introduction to Diatom Taxonomy and Analysis
11 - 14 November 2003
Department of Geography and Environmental Studies
University of Adelaide, South Australia
This four day course is designed for ecologists, palaeoecologists and
archaeologists. It provides a thorough grounding in diatom taxonomy, analysis
and its applications. The course assumes no prior knowledge of diatoms and
consists of lectures and practical classes.
The proposed staff teaching on the course will be -

The propose timetable will be -
Day 1: Tuesday 11th November
Lectures 1- 7 : diatom introduction and morphology, diatom systematics and
taxonomy
Day 2: Wednesday 12th November
Lecture 8: Applications of diatom analysis
Practical: examination of own material using research microscopes
Day 3: Thursday 13th November
Lecture 8: Sampling modern and fossil communities
Practical: Examination of own material using research microscopes
Day 4: Friday 14th November
Lecture 9: Short presentations by Diatoma researchers on the applications of
diatom analysis to their projects
Practical: examination of own material using research microscopes
Students are encouraged to bring their own (already prepared) slides along to
the course for examination in the practical sessions.
Cost of course: $ 600
Accommodation can be arranged
