Audit of science skills

An interesting development. The Minister of Science, Peter McGauran, has
just announced an audit of science skills in Australia.

Quoting from the press release:

A skills audit to address areas of scientific skills shortage in Australia
was announced today.

Australian Government Science Minister Peter McGauran announced the skills
audit during the 22nd International Entomology Congress in Brisbane.

"The skills audit will be undertaken by the Australian Government in
collaboration with the CSIRO, universities and industry groups to determine
the extent to which the needs of Australian industry and research bodies
for graduates in science, technology and engineering are being met,"
Minister McGauran said.

"The audit will evaluate the supply and demand of graduates from the major
scientific disciplines and also report on skills shortages in
sub-disciplines such as statistics, organic chemistry, horticulture,
applied physics, power engineering, and entomology.

"There is a high need for quality scientists in Australia. This audit will
provide a clear understanding of where shortages lie and allow government,
industry and research organisations to better meet these skill needs.

"The Australian Government is committed to encouraging students to pursue
careers in science, technology and engineering. This skills audit is one
more initiative that makes sure students see the benefits of studying
science," Minister McGauran said.

I don't have any details on time frame or process yet but will advise when
I get more info. Don't imagine we will see an outcome for 12 months though.

Cheers
