PhD Scholarship: University of Wollongong, School of Earth and
Environmental Sciences
A PhD Scholarship is available for an enthusiastic graduate with a
background in organic chemistry (essential) and Quaternary science
(desirable), to elucidate aspects of faunal and floral evolution, and
human migration, throughout Beringia (northeast Asia and northwest
North America). Candidates will ideally hold a First Class or 2A
Bachelor Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. The
successful applicant will probably have Australian citizenship or
residency or New Zealand citizenship. Fieldwork is required in eastern
Siberia and Arctic North America.
The project is supported by an ARC Discovery grant and further ARC-LIEF
new equipment funds, and involves collaboration with the University of
Oxford. The PhD scholar will be involved in the application of
compound-specific C-14 dating of extracted DNA and organics, and
fieldwork and sedimentological aspects.
The scholarship has a tax-free stipend of A$18,837 per annum, for up to
three years, although exceptionally well qualified graduates may be
offered a stipend up to A$23,886 per annum. Non-Australasian
applicants are welcome, and, if successful, would receive the stipend,
but would also incur tuition fees of approximately A$22,400 per annum.
