Last Glacial and Holocene Paleoprecipitation Records from Pedogenic Carbonate
Applications are invited from suitably qualified
applicants to conduct PhD research within the
Soil and Physical Sciences Group at Lincoln
University. The Group is part of The Agriculture
and Life Sciences Division, the largest Academic
Division within Lincoln University.
The successful candidate will complete a PhD
program into deriving well dated quantitative
paleoprecipitation records from the isotopic
geochemistry of pedogenic carbonate in deep loess
deposits. Transfer functions (relating
paleoprecipitation to the ä13C of pedogenic
carbonate) will be derived using two approaches;
a modern analogue approach and by instrumenting
and sampling laboratory lysimeters to derive
relationships between ä13C, soil temperature and
moisture. Age control for the carbonate records
will be provided by radiocarbon dating. Sampling
will occur across a latitudinal gradient from
south Canterbury to Hawkes Bay, east coast of New
Zealand. The project is part of a larger body of
work investigating drivers of southern hemisphere glaciation.
The project will be carried out at Lincoln
University. Funding is available to cover
operating costs; the candidate will need to cover
fees. From 2006, international PhD students pay
fees at the domestic rate. Details of
scholarships are available from
http://www.lincoln.ac.nz/scholar or by contacting
Jane Edwards (edwardj1 at lincoln.ac.nz ).
Preference will be given to applicants with an
undergraduate or masters degree in earth or
environmental sciences, with experience in soil
science, geology, geomorphology, geochemistry or physical geography.
For further details, contact Dr. Peter Almond
(almondp at lincoln.ac.nz ) or Dr. Carol Smith (smithc2 at lincoln.ac.nz ).
