Science meets Parliament

Information sheet

This year's Science meets Parliament will take place on Tuesday 28th of
February and Wednesday 1st of March 2006.

Program
Briefing Day - Tuesday 28 February (all participants are expected to
attend the briefing day)

Venue: National Press Club, 16 National Circuit, Barton

9.00am 	Registrations open (please note there is no secure place for
luggage so 
				interstate participants should try and
check in to their hotel prior to registration
10.00am    	Welcome, policy overview, briefing on does and don'ts of
lobbying
11.30am    	morning Tea 
12.00pm    	Lunch - Guest speaker to be confirmed (Minister Julie
Bishop or new 
		Chief Scientist)
2.00pm      	Break for networking while NPC club is cleared and set
up for afternoon
		session
2.30pm      	Briefing session - science and technology and the policy
cycle. A 
		professional development session aimed at understanding
the dynamics of 
		the policy cycle and how and when and in what form can
science and
		technology maximise its impact.

				*	Professor Glenn Withers
(Professor of Public Policy and Politics, ANU) 
				*	Professor Mike Gallagher (Former

7.00pm      	Science meets Parliament Dinner, Great Hall, Parliament
House (enter
		through public entrance). Drinks in Marble Hall at

Science meets Parliament - Wednesday 1 March 2006
Venue: Parliament House. 
PLEASE NOTE - Due to security requirements all participants will require
passes which must be collected inside the public entrance. Please arrive
at least 45 mins in advance of your first meeting in case there are
delays. 

7.30am      	Breakfast for early career researchers
8.00am      	Meetings with Parliamentarians commence and will
continue throughout 
		the day. Some meetings will be at 5.00pm but the
majority will be in the 
		morning.

This year registrations for Science meets Parliament are being
co-ordinated through the FASTS member societies. (please refer
<http://www.fasts.org/Fsite/Membership/Membership.htm> for list of
members)

If you wish to register then please contact your association or society
who will then determine registrations.

Parliamentarians and participating scientists have been asked to select
their preferences from the following list of topics.
	*	Biodiversity and habitat - Global warming adaptation,
Biodiscovery, farming on marginal land 
	*	Bio-security - protecting Australia from pests,
diseases, weeds and microbes    
	*	Brain research - understanding addiction and disease    
	*	Climate change - global effects, carbon reduction,

	*	Energy futures - renewables, nuclear, fossil fuel
