PhD Scholarship in Holocene Environmental Change
AT SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY, NORTHERN NSW
Applications are invited for the following postgraduate research
scholarship
tenable in the School of Environmental Science and Management at
Southern
Cross University, Lismore, NSW.
Back-barrier sediment bodies from coastal northern New South Wales:
unlocking an archive of Holocene environmental change
Holocene (0-10,000 years BP) sediments from coastal northern NSW
preserve an
almost unexplored archive of environmental change. This project aims,
firstly, to formulate a depositional model for these sediments, and,
secondly, to procure the most complete proxy records of environmental
change
yet recovered from an Australian coastal setting. The depositional
model and
the proxy records will together provide insights into past sealevel and
climatic variation that will inform estimation of potential future
changes.
The depositional model will possess predictive qualities useful in
natural
resource management, such as acid sulphate soil distribution, flooding,
and
wetland restoration.
The successful applicant will be based at the Lismore campus of Southern
Cross University, and will be expected to undertake field work in
coastal
systems along the coast of northern NSW. The PhD will work within a
multidisciplinary team of researchers with expertise that includes
stratigraphy, sedimentology, geomorphology, palynology, diatom
palaeoecology, phytolith palaeoecology, and GIS.
Applicants must be an Australian citizen or resident, and should hold an
honours (2I or I) degree, or Masters degree, in sedimentary geology,
geomorphology, geoarchaeology, or a related field. Students who expect
to
hold such a qualification by the end of 2006 are also encouraged to
apply.
The scholarship pays a tax free stipend of $20 000 pa for 3.5 years, and
includes additional funding for project operation costs and relocation.
