Dear Aqualisters
the term "chevron" is a little older than the reference cited by Paul
Hearty (Hearty et al, 1998). It was used at least as early as 1989 by
Maxwell and Haynes.
Cooke et al. (1993) defined Maxwell and Haynes' chevrons as "
flow-transverse, parallel, sinuous, low-amplituide (10-30cm),
long-wavelength (130-1,200m) belts of fine, pale sand migrating over
darker coarse sands at rates of 500m year" (quote from Cooke et al., 1993,
p. 325). Maxwell and Haynes reported the chevrons from SW Egypt and N
Sudan. The pictures indicate that the chevrons are very sinuous, almost
V-shaped, barchanoidal dunes.
