You are invited to submit abstracts for the following session at the
XVII INQUA Congress (Cairns, Australia, 28 July - 3 August 2007).

'Quaternary role of monsoons and westerlies in drylands'
Convenors: Paul Hesse (Australia), David Thomas (UK)
We welcome papers from any discipline that contributes to a better
resolved interpretation of dryland (hyperarid, arid, semiarid, dry
subhumid) behaviour and status during the Quaternary, especially in the
last glacial cycle and the Holocene. Papers may for example be
place-based, system-based, or report the application of new chronometric
findings, and may directly or indirectly contribute to understanding the
climate (monsoon; westerly) drivers of change.
This session forms part of the program of IGCP500 Westerlies and
Monsoons: Impacts of Climate Change and Variability on Dryland
Environments, Hydrogeology and People
http://igcp500.ouce.ox.ac.uk/
IGCP500 represents a community of c 300 researchers from a range of
disciplines who investigate the dynamics of dryland environments at a
range of time scales. The particular focus of the program is on how the
multi-millennial scale dynamics of monsoon and westerly climate systems
have affected the extent, distribution, and operation of environmental
processes (Hydrological, Geomorphological, Ecological) in drylands.
Considerable emphasis is given to producing better resolved models of
dryland dynamics in the Late Quaternary period, and identifying the
drivers of these dynamics, so that system sensitivities can be better
understood.
IGCP500 expects to be able to award a limited number of bursaries to
support the travel costs of individuals presenting a paper/poster in
this session. Preference is usually given to developing world scientists
and/or graduate students who have limited recourse to other sources of
funding. Details of support and how to apply will be given on the
IGCP500 website after 1 February 2007'.
Abstracts may be submitted at
http://www.icms.com.au/inqua2007/abstract/
The deadline for abstract submission is 31st January 2007
