best regards
Rob Wilson

Research Assistant (SK228/08)

Closing date: 01 September 2008

*£23,002 -£27,466 per annum

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to work on a project funded through a European Union 6th framework project focussing on palaeoclimatology and climate modelling within Europe (project 017008-2), which will continue until June 2010.

You will be part of a large consortium of scientists from many institutions throughout Europe who specialise in utilising palaeoclimate proxy archives (tree-rings, historical documents, lake/marine sediments, ice-cores etc), and will therefore benefit from its international collaboration and exchange. Together with consortium members, you will essentially help to address one overall question: Does the magnitude and rate of 20th century climate change exceed the natural variability of European climate over the last millennium? You will assist Dr. Rob Wilson with the analysis of new and old palaeoclimatic data, with emphasis on combining and analyzing different proxy archives and comparing proxy-based climate reconstructions with model output. Goals include exploring new and novel ways to develop multi-proxy palaeoclimate reconstructions that will lead to better estimates of past climate at a variety of spatial scales within Europe.

This is a fixed term post for a period of 18 months in the first instance and will be available from 1 October 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter. You should have or be working towards a Ph.D. (be near to completion) in natural or physical sciences with expertise in climatology or palaeoclimatology. Strong mathematical/statistical abilities would be highly beneficial and computer programming abilities would be welcome.

*Please note that more experienced candidates will be considered for appointment at grade 6 (salary range £28,290-33,780) but the duties and responsibilities of the role will be altered to reflect this.

They are sensitive to light, to moisture, to wind, to pressure.
Sensitivity implies sensation. Might a man feel into the soul of a tree
for these sensations? If a tree were capable of awareness, this faculty
might prove useful. "
