Dear All,
Potential PhD candidates are invited to apply for a funded scholarship
at the Department of Archaeology and Natural History (ANH), College of
Asia and the Pacific, ANU. The candidate will be associated with a new
area of research funded through the ARC and focusing on the human and
environmental history of the Indian Ocean.
Further details can be downloaded at
http://palaeoworks.anu.edu.au/pubs/IO2009PhD.pdf
The candidate may be involved in one of a number of key areas of this
research project including:
• Investigate the nature and antiquity of early human occupation,
maritime mobility, or trans-oceanic interaction on one or more of the
archipelagos through archaeological excavation.
• Reconstruction of environmental change using a range of biotic
(pollen, charcoal, diatoms, plant and invertebrate macro-fossil remains)
and non-biotic (particle size, humification, stable isotopes) proxies on
sediment cores taken from one of the archipelagos.
• Palaeo-tsunami reconstruction along an east-west transect in the
Indian Ocean and the impact of catastrophic events on human occupation
and/or ecosystems of islands.
Resources and associations: This is a well-resourced project conducted
in a region of emerging importance in global prehistory and
palaeoclimate studies. You will join a vibrant palaeoecological and
archaeological group at ANU where you will have access to
state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in the Department of Archaeology
and Natural History, CAP.
Background of candidates:
We are seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic students with a
background in archaeology, biology, geography, environmental science, or
similar. Some field experience would be an advantage. A first (or 2a)
class honours or research masters in a relevant field is required.
