Glenn Sanecki Alpine Scholarship
PhD research opportunity
The Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian
National University and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is
seeking applications for the Glenn Sanecki Alpine Scholarship. The
scholarship is to support a PhD student undertaking research in the
field of the physical or biological sciences in the alpine and
sub-alpine areas of Kosciuszko National Park, or in, or partly in, other
alpine/sub-alpine areas of Australia (subject to agreement with ANU and
NPWS).
This scholarship is in honour of Dr Glenn Sanecki who passed away in
2007. Glenn was passionate about the alpine environment and completed
a PhD at The Australian National University on the distribution of
small mammals in relation to natural and modified snow in the
Australian Alps. Glenn worked for NPWS in Kosciuszko National Park
for many years from the 1990s onwards. During his time with NPWS he
made considerable contributions in relation to the monitoring of
wildlife and flora, including weed control.
This scholarship is worth $20,427 tax-free (2009 rate) per year for
three years full-time (with the option for a six-month extension if
required), tenable at the Australian National University. The
scholarship is co-funded by NPWS and ANU.
The eligibility requirements are a Bachelors Degree with first class
honours or equivalent academic and professional qualifications. The
scholarship is only open to citizens or permanent residents of
Australian and New Zealand.
Interested individuals are invited to submit a CV and a brief
statement of their own interests and ideas in this area of research
and to discuss these with the contacts below. Applications will be
assessed by a panel consisting of representatives from the ANU, NPWS
and the Australian Institute of Alpine Studies. The successful
candidate will be invited to apply for admission to the University.
