M.Phil and PhD projects at The University of Hong Kong available for 2009 entry

Supervisor: Dr. Adam Switzer, Research Assistant Professor, Department of Earth
Sciences, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China

Applications are invited for a fully funded M.Phil or Ph.D. Studentship (3-4
years) in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. Two
fully funded M.Phil or PhD scholarships worth $HK13,100 per month (~$A30000/yr)
for two (M.Phil), three or four (PhD) years are available on a project
entitled: "Documentary and geological records of catastrophic marine
inundations caused by large storms and tsunami on the coast of Taiwan and
southeast China". This project is funded by a grant from the GRF Grant from the
University Grants council of Hong Kong to A.D. Switzer and Co-investigators
Dale Dominey-Howes U. of NSW and Prof Wang Wei South China Normal U. Successful
applicants will be required to enroll in 2009. Exceptional candidates may also
be eligible for additional fellowships and scholarships.

The project will examine Holocene records of coastal environmental change and
possible evidence for tsunami and storm surge flooding in southeast China and
Taiwan. One PhD project will focus on the coast of China, and the other will
work on the south and west coasts of Taiwan. Funds are available to support all
travel, research and field expenses as well as international conference
attendance and technical training. 

Applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates with either a first
class Honours (or high second class) degree and/or Masters by Research in
physical geography, geomorphology, sedimentology, micropalaeontology, earth
sciences, coastal studies, environmental studies or natural hazards. Students
with language skills in Mandarin or a willingness to learn Mandarin are
particularly encouraged to apply. 

In addition to these core skill areas, applicants who have demonstrable
capabilities in GIS, remote sensing, modelling and/or hydrodynamics/mathematics
would be particularly welcome.
