PhD and Masters Opportunities at the Australian
Tsunami Research Centre and Natural Hazards
Laboratory, School of Biological, Earth and
Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney
ADVERT 1

Applications sought from suitably qualified
graduates for fully funded PhD or Masters by Research scholarship(s).

EITHER one fully funded PhD scholarship worth
$22,500 per year for three years OR two fully
funded Masters by Research scholarships worth
$11,250 each per year for 18 months are available
in the new Australian Tsunami Research Centre,
School of Biological, Earth and Environmental
Sciences, UNSW on a project entitled: “Testing
the Australian Megatsunami Hypothesis”. This
project is funded by a grant from the Australian
Research Council to Associate Professor Dale
Dominey-Howes and Professor James Goff.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to
enroll as soon as possible and the position(s) remain open until filled.

The project(s) are to examine Holocene records of
coastal environmental change and possible
evidence for tsunami and storm surge flooding on
the west coast of New Zealand. Funds are
available to support all travel, research and
field expenses as well as international
conference attendance and technical training.

Applications are sought from suitably qualified
candidates with either a first class Honours
degree and/or Masters by Research (depending on
appointment at either Masters or PhD level) in
physical geography, geomorphology, sedimentology,
micropalaeontology, earth sciences, coastal
studies, environmental studies or natural
hazards. In addition to these core skill areas,
applicants who have demonstrable capabilities in
GIS, remote sensing, modelling and/or
hydrodynamics/mathematics would be particularly welcome.

For further information about the project, please
contact Associate Professor Dale Dominey-Howes,
Australian Tsunami Research Centre, School of
Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences,
UNSW. Email:
<mailto:dale.dh at unsw.edu.au>dale.dh at unsw.edu.au;
Tel: +61 (2) 9385 4830 or Professor James Goff at
the same address. Email:

Please note – scholarships are only available to
Australian or New Zealand permanent residents or
citizens. The successful applicant(s) will be
enrolled in to either Masters or PhD programs in
Physical Geography or Geology at UNSW but will
work in partnership with the project collaborator
Professor Jon Nott (James Cook University, Cairns).

The scholarship is worth $25,000 per year for
three years. In addition to the scholarship,
limited funding will also be available to cover
fieldwork, training, analysis costs and

The successful applicant will be required to
enroll as soon as possible and the position remains open until filled.

Possible PhD topics include (but are not limited to):

    * Indigenous knowledge systems in relation to
environment; indigenous knowledge and coping in relation to natural hazards

    * Tsunami and storm surge modeling

    * Geological and/or archaeological evidence
for palaeotsunami in the South Pacific

    * Geological and/or archaeological evidence
for palaeotsunami in Australia (not in New South Wales)

    * Coupled human-environment systems and natural hazards

    * Social dimensions of hazard and risk

    * Engineering vulnerability assessment

    * Climate hazards in Australia
