Dear AQUA members,
I have accepted a post-doc at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig,
Germany and will be starting there in February next year. This will
make my continued involvement as Editor of Quaternary Australasia
difficult (in my present capacity) beyond the December 2009 issue. I
would not be able to oversee the production, printing and
distribution as I presently do, although I am happy to continue as a
joint Editor with reduced responsibilities.
AQUA has two options, which will need to be arranged for the July
2010 issue onwards:
1) to seek a new Editor to replace me entirely, or
2) to appoint a joint, Australian-based Editor, who would share the
responsibility of the Editorship. It is a big job and in many ways
splitting responsibilities would be advantageous for both parties.
The Editor's role currently involves:
- soliciting contributions for each issue - including peer-reviewed
articles; reports on conferences, field trips, workshops and events;
book reviews; extended abstracts; thesis abstracts; news and notices
of upcoming events;
- ensuring there is sufficient material for each issue, and that
contributors meet deadlines;
- coordinating peer reviews for research papers (at present research
papers are reviewed by two reviewers);
- editing other contributions;
- ensuring all contributions are of satisfactory quality for
publication (including resolution of any figures or photos);
- collating all contributions for each issue;
- liaising with graphic designer regarding production of print-ready proof;
- final editing of proof;
- liaising with printers;
- coordinating distribution of issues (including envelope stuffing
and postage, printing address labels for members (liaison with AQUA
Secretary), ensuring payment of invoices for production (liaison with
AQUA Treasurer));
- fielding emails from interested parties and advertisers...
It's a big job, but one which is worthwhile. Certainly there could be
scope for a joint Editor if the roles were well enough defined and
satisfactory to both parties.
We will need to appoint someone by January to ensure that the July
2010 issue gets out on time.
Could any potentially interested people please get in touch with me
in the first instance to discuss options, which we will then take to
the AQUA Executive.
Best,
Kat Fitzsimmons
