Dear AQUA community,
Two previously Australian national PhD scholarships have now been open
to international student applications.
Details are as follows.
Kind regards and apologies for cross postings,
Leanne Armand
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*PhD Scholarships in Phytoplankton Research.
*
Faculty of Science (Department of Biological Sciences), Macquarie
University, Sydney.
*Closing Date: 30 November 2009*
Two MQRES scholarships are available in the Climate Risk CORE to support
higher degree research study projects in Phytoplankton diversity.
Applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates with either a
first class Honours degree (or equivalent) and/or Masters by Research in
a discipline relevant to the final PhD project approved for study.
*Project 1. PHYTOPLANKTON DIVERSITY, OCCURRENCE AND RELATIONSHIPS TO THE
BIOGEOCHEMICAL AND CLIMATOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN THE SUBANTARCTIC.
*
This project will document the diatoms of the Subantarctic sourced from
sediment trap collections in the Australian Subantarctic Ocean. An
uninterrupted record (1997-2005 +) of diatom remains from three
different locations and several depths at each location have been
collected and partially processed. This material is a valuable and
unique source of diatom biodiversity, biogeography and annual
composition available for baseline documentation. The thesis will be
taxonomically based and will incorporate published biogeochemical data,
climatological influences and plankton ecology.
*Project 2. PHYTOPLANKTON OF THE EAST AUSTRALIAN CURRENT.*
In collaboration with a team of Australian marine specialists from
Universities and CSIRO, the floral distribution of phytoplankton along
the East Australian coastline and under the varying influence of the
East Australian Current will be studied in relation to oceanographic
parameters and climate processes such as ENSO. The work may include time
at sea.
Dr Leanne Armand will supervise the successful applicants, but other
members of staff with appropriate complimentary skills across Macquarie
University or the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) and CSIRO
may/will also work with the successful applicants.
For further information contact the project supervisor, Dr Leanne
Armand: telephone: +61-2- 9850 8351, e-mail: larmand at science.mq.edu.au.
*Application forms and conditions of award, are available from the
Higher Degree Research Office: www:
