Hi everyone,

Apologies in advance if you've already seen this but thought this might be of interest to the wider community.

Best wishes,

Chris

The 1st Aus2k Regional Workshop: Towards Data Synthesis
31 May - 2 June 2010, Melbourne, Australia

Aus2k Workshop Objectives

This 3-day workshop will target the recognised need for extended estimates of regional-scale climate variables to ultimately reduce uncertainties about climate change and its potential impacts in the Australasian region (we are particularly interested in focussing on high resolution (annual to decadal) and quantitative studies). The aim of this workshop is to fill a critical gap in climate science by developing annual to decadal climate reconstructions for Australasia for the past 2000 years (henceforth 2k) and report these results to the wider scientific community through the PAGES Regional 2k Network<http://www.pages-igbp.org/science/last2millennia.html>.

The meeting will be focused towards achieving the goals of the Aus2k Group, which are to:

1) Develop multi variate reconstructions of climate variables (temp, precip) on annual to decadal timesscales from the Australasian region for the past 2k
2) Compare palaeo data to models simulations over the past 2k
3) Publish our review and new results in the PAGES regional 2k synthesis book by 2012-13

Confirmed Speakers

- L. Newman: PAGES 2k Initiative
- C. Turney: The Aus2k Working Group
- M. England: Regional climate variability and change
- D. Karoly: Relevance of the past for reducing future uncertainty
- M. Gagen: Speleothems
- J. Lough: Corals
- P. Baker: Australian tree rings
- J. Palmer: New Zealand tree rings
- T. van Ommen: Ice cores

Slartibartfast: Science has achieved some wonderful things of course, but I'd far rather be happy than right any day.
Arthur Dent: And are you?
Slartibartfast: No. Thats where it all falls down of course.
Arthur Dent: Pity. It sounded like quite a good lifestyle otherwise.
