*Ph.D. studentship in geochronology and its applications to prehistoric
archaeology*

The Department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for
Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany, is seeking a PhD student to
work on geochronology and its applications to prehistoric archaeology.

The project will focus on applying the geochronologic techniques of
optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) to critical archaeological sites
in the lower Danube region of eastern Europe, working with
interdisciplinary teams to investigate interactions between humans and
their environment in the past. The project may interconnect with
existing departmental projects in Romania and Bulgaria, and will include
a field component. There will also be scope to undertake fundamental
research into luminescence dating techniques. The project will therefore
be interdisciplinary, incorporating elements of geochronology,
archaeology and Quaternary geology.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent (e.g. Honours) in archaeology, geology, geography, physics, or a related field. The working language of the Institute is English. The PhD stipend is limited to three years
according to the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society, and will begin late 2011/start 2012. The closing date for applications is *15 May 2011*. Accepted students will be a part of the International Max Planck Research <http://imprs.eva.mpg.de/start.html>
School <http://imprs.eva.mpg.de/start.html>. For further information please contact Dr Kathryn Fitzsimmons (Kathryn_fitzsimmons at eva.mpg.de <mailto:Kathryn_fitzsimmons at eva.mpg.de>) or Professor Jean-Jacques Hublin (hublin at eva.mpg.de).
