Commencement date: February-March 2014.

 

Time commitment: 0.6 FTE (3 year fixed-term).

 

Salary: Research Assistant Grade 2 Level 01 $61,138 p/a (pro rata) plus 9.5%
superannuation contribution.

 

The Palaeoenvironmental Research Team at the University of Melbourne is
seeking a research assistant to work in our Palaeoecology Laboratory.
Applicants will have some experience working in a laboratory setting,
preferably with experience in palaeoecological and/or palaeoenvironmental
research.  The successful applicant will display a willingness to engage
with and learn analytical and data gathering methodologies in palaeoecology.
The capacity to work effectively in the field in remote locations is also a
desirable characteristic.

 

Job duties:

.   Laboratory upkeep;

.   Sediment core logging and maintenance;

.   Pollen processing and counting;

.   Charcoal processing and counting;

.   Sample preparation for other palaeoenvironmental analyses (e.g. particle
size analysis, stable isotope analysis, elemental analysis, diatom
processing, chironomid processing, radiocarbon sample preparation);

.   Join field excursions in to remote regions;

.   Basic admin tasks (project account keeping, expense coding, travel and
accommodation booking, equipment/consumables stock take and regulation);

.   Training of new staff.
